During more than 25 years working for Amnesty International's Irish Section as Chair and then Director, Mary Lawlor had been constantly inspired by the work of human rights defenders who time after time put their vision of a civil and just world for all ahead of their own safety.
 
In 2001 she set up Front Line, the International Foundation for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders, in partnership with Irish businessman Denis O'Brien.
 
Since then Front Line has established itself as a respected and trusted organisation providing round the clock practical support and delivering fast and effective action on behalf of human rights defenders at risk.
 
Front Line promotes strengthened international and regional measures to protect human rights defenders including through support for the work of the UN Special Representative on Human Rights Defenders. Front Line seeks to promote respect for the UN Declaration on Human Rights Defenders.
 
Front Line has Special Consultative Status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations.
 
Front Line has Observer Status with the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights.
 
Mary Lawlor holds a BA in Psychology and Philosophy and post graduate diplomas in Montessori Teaching and Personnel Management.
